“DILLIGAF: Destressed, Destroyed, and Embelished” is an exhibition curated by Othelo Gervacio showcasing the customization and personalization of the leather, denim, and even paper jackets of a truly unique group of artists. The exhibition was only on view for a single past weekend at ALLDAYEVERYDAY in New York City.

What is the first article of clothing that you personalized and what exactly did you do to make it more your own?

I used to draw on my school backpack’s with bic pens. All my favorite bands, Bart Simpson, diamond “S”s, the names of girls I had crushes on, etc…

Fast forward thirty years. What will you be personalizing then?

Tattooed robotic arms probably.

What is the first article of clothing that you personalized and what exactly did you do to make it more your own?

The first article of clothing that I can remember personalizing would probably be a stenciled t shirt.  I used to take manilla folders that my dad used for work and cut out intricate stencils with exacto blades.  Then I’d spray paint the stencils onto t shirts and sweatshirts and after a wash or two in the machine they’d be soft and wouldn’t even smell much like spray paint.

Fast forward thirty years. What will you be personalizing then?

In 30 years…well let’s see, I’ll be 55 years old.  Hopefully an entire line – but that isn’t something id like to wait so long for.  For 30 years Id like to be personalizing my marble kitchen counter top with the sub zero fridge and the big sink for all the big dishes.  I guess well see, I don’t really think that far in advance.

What is the first article of clothing that you personalized and what exactly did you do to make it more your own?

I actually remember this distinctly. I was going to see “Days Of Thunder” in the theater ( I looked it up, i was eight) and I painted a “Days Of Thunder” shirt so I would have something from the movie that had just come out. I drew a car on the front and tried to copy the font of the movie poster. I remember this so well because I wasn’t able to finish before my friends mom came to pick me up and I threw a fit. I’m sure me at eight years old would have looked so cool.I think I tried to do this whenever i would go to the movies, only clearly remembering that I succeeded once, Ninja Turtles, I was really good at drawing Ninja Turtles.

Fast forward thirty years. What will you be personalizing then?

Probably a monogram on a dress shirt or handkerchief.

What is the first article of clothing that you personalized and what exactly did you do to make it more your own?

First ever… jeans. With bleach.

Fast forward thirty years. What will you be personalizing then?

Hopefully I’ll still be able to do my job but also keep developing and creating new ideas in art and fashion. That is if I live through Hurricane ‘Sandy’.
